I Heart North Carolina

Roses blooming in mid-November. Winter skies blue, lovely blue throughout. Sunshine. These are the days - fall days, winter days, spring days - that make me love this place. It's the heat of summer that I find difficult as a Michigan expatriate. Not that it never got as hot in Michigan, because it did and it does. But it's the quantity. Like how winter in Michigan seems to linger about two or three months too long, like an unwelcome guest who ignores your polite mention to your spouse about how tired you are, and fills up another plate with hors d'oeuvres. Michigan, where you grow up wondering why the groundhog's seeing his shadow isn't good news. That's what summer is like in North Carolina. I never thought I'd think such thoughts about summer, but there it is in black and white.

But that's not where I am. I'm in November. And for me, in the South, November is the second month of wonderful.

Wish you were here.

What Happened to Spring?

Here's our forecast: Today it's going to be 98°. Tomorrow, 99°. And Saturday and Sunday are each supposed to reach 100°. That's more appropriate for August, and has no business whatsoever in early June. (Just letting whomever is interested know.) The dog days are the downside of living in North Carolina. And why'd they have to come so early?

Giving thanks to God for A/C in NC.

North Carolina

September days separate for me the difference between where I live now and where I used to live. It's 5:30 p.m. and 97°F outside. Nearly mid-September. I hope it cools into the 80s soon. It's been a hot summer.

(I know, I know, you have worse problems.)

Praise for Little Things

This morning I took a shower with no interruptions. I dressed with no interruptions. No one pounded on the door. No one cried. No messes needed to be cleaned when I came out to check on the two ephemeral angels.

. . . . .

It is 82 today. Yesterday it was in the low 70s. Tomorrow it is supposed to be in the low 70s - a little island paradise in a sea of 50s and 60s. North Carolina ain't so bad.

Snow

It snowed briefly this morning. Nothing on the ground and little in the air, but the flakes were large and beautiful. Stained with apple sauce, the Raccoon grunted twice, pointed, and climbed up into the bay window to get a better view. Anna threw on pants and galloped outside to taste the water-as-snow on her tongue. The yellow-haired child just sat in the recliner and grinned.

Sublimey!

It's 70 degrees here today - beautiful. Say Yes! to North Carolina.
